Work From Your RV: 4 Strategies for Becoming a Successful Digital Nomad

If you love to travel often, one of the biggest obstacles preventing you from doing this is your work schedule. In the United States, the average employee receives a mere 10 vacation days per year. Oftentimes, the demands of work and life prevent individuals from using their paid days off for leisure. However, with the rise of remote work, more individuals are taking their work on the road with them.

Whether you’re an employee, an independent contractor, or an aspiring freelancer, it is becoming easier than ever before to become fully location independent. If you are considering embracing the digital nomad lifestyle from your RV, explore these four tips for success from Countryside RVing.

Establish a budget and a plan.

Before rushing out the door with your laptop in hand, it is wise to establish both a budget and a plan for your new endeavor. You will want to explore how much it will cost to work from the road, how much you can expect to earn from the sale of your home, how much RV maintenance will cost, and so on. Since everyone has a unique situation and set of circumstances, you will need to identify critical items that are specific to your life. Having a set plan and budget will give you the confidence you need to pursue the life of a location-independent professional, and will ensure that things run as smoothly as possible.

Purchase or rent a tech-friendly RV.

One of the most critical aspects of being a successful digital nomad is having access to reliable tech at all times. Not being able to charge your computer quickly or not having access to a quality internet connection can lead to massive headaches during your workday.

To prevent negative situations from arising while on the road, consider purchasing or renting a tech-friendly RV. Ensure that it can support your heavy power needs (especially if you regularly use your phone as a hotspot) and that it has everything you need to keep you connected. You should also stock your RV with backups of important cords and adaptors.

Turn your freelancing into a full-time business.

Plan to work as a freelancer or independent contractor to fulfill your dreams of becoming a digital nomad? An excellent way to increase your client load is to offer your services through a formally registered business. Rather than being just another freelancer in the crowd, your business will add an extra layer of credibility and trust.

If you plan on starting your own small business, consider harnessing the benefits of forming an LLC. An LLC business structure can protect your personal finances and provide additional tax benefits. When exploring the idea of using a formation service (here is one), brush up on your state’s regulations prior to moving ahead. You will need a permanent address in order to file for your business’s LLC, so you’ll want to make sure that you are reviewing the rules for that state only (rather than the state you are currently staying in).

Set a schedule that allows you to enjoy your new lifestyle.

In the midst of planning your new work arrangements, don’t forget to have fun! The whole purpose of this change is to allow you to travel and enjoy life to the fullest. If you are always getting wrapped up in work, being location-independent has few benefits.

That’s why you should set a work schedule for yourself that balances your duties with enjoyment. Being your own boss means that you get to determine where and when you work. Take full advantage of getting to live life on the road and plan for vacation days (where you do no work whatsoever) when possible.

Although it may seem like a distant dream, being a remote working digital nomad is a real lifestyle for many. You don’t need to be independently wealthy or exceptionally talented to achieve this goal. With a bit of planning, research, and preparation, almost anyone can pursue life on the road.
